What is Dry Cupping?

Dry cupping is a therapeutic technique that uses suction to gently lift the skin and underlying tissues. This vacuum effect draws fresh, oxygen-rich blood into the area while helping to remove stagnant blood and waste products. The circular marks that sometimes appear afterward are simply signs of increased circulation and are rarely painful.

As new blood enters the tissues, the body begins forming new blood vessels,a process known as neovascularisation, which supports long-term healing by improving nutrient and oxygen delivery. The suction also creates a controlled, mild micro-trauma within the tissue layers. This triggers the body’s natural healing response, releasing white blood cells, platelets, fibroblasts and other beneficial chemicals through a process called sterile inflammation.

Cupping also stretches the fascia and connective tissues, helping to reduce muscle tension and improve mobility. When multiple cups are applied around an injured or tight area, they can produce a strong stretch reflex throughout the tissue, increasing flexibility, relieving discomfort and enhancing overall movement.
How is a Dry Cupping different from a Sports massage?

Dry cupping and sports massage are both hands-on therapies used to relieve tension and support recovery, but they work in very different ways.

Dry cupping uses suction cups placed on the skin to gently lift the tissue. This lifting effect increases blood flow, draws stagnant fluid out of tight areas, and stimulates the body’s natural healing response. Cupping focuses on decompressing the tissues, creating space, improving circulation, and reducing restrictions in the fascia.

Sports massage, on the other hand, uses manual pressure applied by the therapist’s hands, elbows, or forearms. Instead of lifting the tissue, it compresses and manipulates the muscles to reduce tightness, break down adhesions, and improve mobility. Sports massage targets specific muscle groups and is often used before or after exercise to enhance performance and speed recovery.

In short, cupping lifts and decompresses, while sports massage presses and manipulates, both helping to reduce pain, improve movement, and support overall muscle health in different ways.Click on this text to edit it.

Dry Cupping is typically used for:

Chronic Back Pain
Plantar Fasciitis
Sciatica

How does Cupping work?

Dry cupping works by creating suction on the skin using specially designed cups. When the cup is placed on the body and the air inside is removed, it forms a vacuum that gently lifts the skin and underlying tissues. This lifting action increases blood flow to the area, draws stagnant fluid away, and encourages the body to deliver fresh oxygen and nutrients to support healing.

The suction also helps separate and stretch layers of muscle and fascia, reducing tightness and improving mobility. In response to this controlled tension and mild micro-trauma, the body triggers a natural healing reaction, sending white blood cells, platelets, and other restorative cells to the area. This can promote tissue repair, improve circulation, and relieve pain.

In short, dry cupping works by decompressing tight tissues, stimulating circulation, and activating the body’s own healing processes.

What are the benefits of a Cupping?

Dry cupping offers a range of therapeutic benefits that support recovery, mobility, and overall tissue health, including:

Enhanced circulation to the muscles, fascia, and skin, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery to soft tissues.

Efficient removal of waste products and chemical irritants, as well as stagnant or congested blood.

Reduction of swelling (oedema) following injury by encouraging fluid drainage.

Controlled micro-trauma that triggers sterile inflammation, activating the body’s natural healing and repair processes.

Improved mobility, as the stretching effect of cupping creates a reflex within the fascia and connective tissues that increases joint range of motion.

Nervous system stimulation during active-movement cupping, helping to retrain muscle memory and improve proprioception.

Effective pain management, reducing muscle tension, nerve compression, and irritation while enhancing movement quality.

Compatibility with other treatments, working seamlessly alongside sports and remedial massage, joint mobilisations, dry needling, medical acupuncture, and heat therapy.

The main benefits of a sports massage are that it can treat, maintain, and prevent the following conditions and syndromes:

Sports related injuries
Runner’s knee
Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow
Restricted Mobility
Frozen shoulder
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
