Ever had that sharp, lightning-like pain shoot down your leg and thought ‘yep, sciatica’? Hang on a sec. Sciatica IS a common culprit for a lot of this kind of discomfort but it’s not ALWAYS the one to blame. The world of nerve pain is full of twists and turns and the right answer isn’t always the obvious one. So how can you be sure?

NB, we know the urge to type your symptoms into the search bar is strong (for us too). But self-diagnosis usually causes more stress than clarity. If you’re in pain, your best bet is to always check in with a doctor or qualified therapist who can actually assess what’s happening in your body.

Sciatica vs Piriformis Syndrome

This is where things often get a little muddled. Sciatica happens when the sciatic nerve itself is irritated – you’ll feel radiating pain from your lower back, travelling all the way down the leg, sometimes as far as your toes.

Piriformis Syndrome on the other hand, is a muscle issues. When the piriformis muscle (deep in your glutes) gets tight or aggravated, it presses on the sciatic nerve nearby. The pain usually sits more in the buttock, flaring up when you sit too long or move in ways that rotate your hip.

Different origins. Different sensations. Same frustration.

Support for Sciatica

If it is sciatica, sports therapy can really help set things right. The focus is on easing the pressure on the nerve and building strength around it:

Core and lower back exercises to support your spine.

Gentle mobility and stretching yoga are great for this.

Gradual progress because nerve recovery isn’t about the quickest of fixes, it’s about consistency.

Support for Piriformis Syndrome

When piriformis syndrome is the troublemaker, we have to approach it differently. It’s all about releasing the muscle and stopping it from clamping down on the nerve:

Glute and hip strength work (bridges, clamshells – small but mighty).

Massage, foam rolling and prickle balls – tools to release stubborn trigger points.

Habitual daily movement to stop irritation from creeping back in.

Why diagnosis matters

So many people assume ‘sciatica’ when in reality it’s something else entirely and chasing the wrong solution just delays proper healing. That’s why proper assessment matters: a clear diagnosis puts you on the fastest route to feeling better.

Nerve pain can be really tough to live with but you’re not stuck with it. Whether it’s sciatica or piriformis syndrome, the right support tailored therapy can help you move with more ease and less pain.
